Head full of too much. Where’s all the spare time gone?

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Too many things I want to do. Seriously! Tonight, I want to write some insights on my “physics & maths blog”, and I want to write a spec for the software I’m writing. I also want to install some code testing continuous build modules, and additionally, I want to go to bed before midnight so I don’t start the week totally shattered.

The likelihood is that in the three hours I’ve got left to squeeze in these three eight-hour projects, the kids will wake at least once, and need consoling or feeding, or both.

It is no wonder I’m so tired most of the time.

Can’t wait for the iPhone4!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Ok, I admit it. I’m extremely excited about the new iPhone 4.

Originally, I got my iPhone 3GS for a single “app”. I run my entire life from a web-based task service called Toodledo, and although clients exist for most phones, the iPhone is the only one that completely caches and syncs the entire task list so that I can have full access to my plans even when I don’t have any internet connection available. That was enough for me to sign up to Apple’s platform, and as my company was paying I wasn’t bothered by cost.

Over time I’ve become very attached to the phone. Most of what I read is via it, news reports, documents, books, web browsing. It’s always in my pocket, I read on the bus, walking to the bus, walking to the shop, in the bath, on the loo! I read so much more now than I have ever done before. I stay in touch with friends, manage staff and software projects, connect with remote servers for management, listen to and watch seminars; the list goes on. I organise my life so conveniently from my pocket.

So, enter the iPhone 4. It’s got a better screen, four times the resolution and four times the contrast ratio. I’m so excited for that, it will really make it easier to read. It’s faster, thinner, lighter, and less likely to get scratched. Oh, and the battery life has been greatly improved (something the 3GS is pretty poor for). There are loads more new features, but it’s the screen that has my biggest vote.

My contract with O2 expires at the beginning of January, but they’ll let me out of my contract early and start a new one for £100. It’s an easy choice.

But, there’s a spanner in the works. We’re moving to the country (gonna eat me a lot of peaches) in the next few months, and I suspect that O2 don’t have the best coverage out there. Damn. I can’t sign myself into a new contract until I’m happy that they’ll work there too.

For now I’ll just have to drool (and play with new operating system on my current phone).
